The first part of the course will be an industry overview and orientation of the process of the development of a pharmaceutical product. An interactive case study format will be used to study the developmental history of specific drug candidates throughout the course, starting with the target identification and method of drug discovery, through the development of lead compounds, patent filings, drug refinement, clinical trials, regulatory approvals and marketing processes. These sessions will be led by members of the pharmaceutical industry who will discuss their roles in the developmental pipeline. During the semester students will have opportunities to visit pharmaceutical company laboratories to gain first hand understanding.
