Biotechnology & Genomics
The objective of the Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree with a concentration in Biotechnology and Genomics is to educate students in the essential skills for managing technical development and commercial applications in industries that apply and make use of the molecular biological sciences, including biotechnology, genomics and proteomics, biochemistry, cell biology, systems biology and nanobiotechnology.
Biotechnology is a rapidly moving transformative technology that has applications in industries as diverse as healthcare, pharmaceutical development, agriculture, alternative energy, environmental monitoring and restoration, and nanotechnology. In particular, biotechnology is now the predominant technology underpinning the development of new pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics and treatments. Genomics is the study of whole genomes (the entire genetic complement of an organism) and is focused on the structure and behavior of all the genes in an organism or ecosystem. Genomics is an application of biotechnology that has developed in the last 10 years and places a particular emphasis on understanding how very large numbers of genes interact with each other and with their environment. Genomics has been made possible by new and rapidly evolving developments in structural and analytical methods (e.g., ultra-high throughput DNA sequencing) along with the development of the computational approaches needed to handle large datasets. Genomics is rapidly finding applications in industry (e.g., in developing personalized medicine, finding new drug targets or searching for novel industrial enzymes in exotic microflora).
We also have a bioinformatics option for those interested. Follow the core courses below and use courses from these lists in bioinformatics or data-enabled sciences, or take any of the courses from the Information Technology or Analytics concentrations. Please consult your advisor for more information.
Students an MBS in Biotechnology and Genomics may work as industry researchers, bioinformaticians, consultants and biotechnical scientists, as well as in other areas that involve more business skills. MBS Graduates in this concentration have found work with job titles such as, Analyst, Analytical Biochemist, Associate Biotech Scientist, Lab Researcher/Technician, Marketing Associate, Regulatory Affairs Associate, Venture Associate, and many others. The places where graduates work include pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and personal care companies, research labs, and others including, Bristol Myers Squibb, Chromocell Corporation, Celgene Corporation, Colgate-Palmolive, Genewiz Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Merck and Co., Zitter Health Insights,and many others.

A student must submit transcripts and GRE scores. A student must have a Bachelor’s Degree in biotechnology, genomics, genetics, biochemistry, biology or a related field. Prerequisite coursework must include two semesters of biology, two semesters of general chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry and one semester of calculus and one semester of genetics. For those that do not have laboratory experience the following course is recommended. 11:126:482 Molecular Genetics Laboratory (3).
For the Master of Business & Science (MBS) degree, students take 8 courses (24 credits) in the sciences and 19 credits in business. The business requirements include courses in finance & accounting, marketing, communication & leadership, capstone, ethics and electives. The business curriculum is listed here. The science courses for the Biotechnology and Genomics concentration are given below.
The Biotechnology & Genomics Science Track consists of five core courses and three elective courses. There is also a required business elective course.
