Career Coaching and LinkedIn Job Search Tips from the Rutgers MBS Virtual Student Huddle Abbe Rosenthal

On March 6, 2026, graduate students in the Master of Business and Science (MBS) Assistant Director and Executive Coach Abbe Rosenthal hosted the Virtual Friday Student Huddle on Zoom, bringing together more than 50 members of the MBS community. These virtual student huddles, hosted on Fridays once a month, serve as an important space for students to engage in open conversations, strengthen their professional networks, and earn the colloquium points required for graduation.

During the session, Rosenthal shared practice job-search advice, drawing on her expertise.

LinkedIn Job Search Strategies for Graduate Students

A major focus of this session was LinkedIn strategies and job search best practices. Rosenthal demonstrated practical ways for students to use LinkedIn more effectively to identify new opportunities and improve their visibility to employers.

Some of the key takeaways from the session included:

  • Using LinkedIn search strategically to find the most recent job openings, especially by filtering posts from the past 24 hours
  • Monitoring job postings closely, since openings are often posted in the morning or late afternoon
  • Applying directly through the company website whenever possible, rather than relying only on LinkedIn postings or “Easy Apply”
  • Considering tools such as Jobscan for tailoring a résumé that passes through the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and LinkedIn Premium to strengthen outreach efforts and improve visibility
  • Searching company websites on LinkedIn for Rutgers alumni and using school connections as a start for networking
  • Approaching conversations thoughtfully by asking questions about the company and role, rather than immediately requesting a referral

Rosenthal also discussed a few ways students can strengthen their LinkedIn profiles, especially the headline and “About” section.

  • She encouraged students pursuing highly specific career paths to reflect that clearly in their headlines, with examples such as “aspiring food scientist” or “aspiring data analyst”
  • Using vertical bars | instead of slashes / in LinkedIn headlines and titles creates a cleaner and more professional look
  • The LinkedIn “About” section is an important space where students can clearly communicate their strengths, interests, and career paths.
  • A strong cover letter should not repeat the résumé. Instead, it should explain how a student’s coursework, experiences, and interests align with the role, demonstrate why the student is a strong fit, and link their academic background to career goals.

This demonstration helped attendees understand how to apply this advice in a real-time job search and how to personalize LinkedIn profiles and application strategies.

Career Coaching and Networking Support in the MBS Degree Program

The session concluded with an open Q&A, which was especially valuable for students. It gave them the opportunity to ask Rosenthal direct questions about job applications, résumés, networking, and career strategy. Beyond the practical advice, this interactive part of the huddle also allowed students to learn from each other’s questions, share common concerns, and feel more connected to the MBS community. The huddle was not only an informative session but also a meaningful networking opportunity for students to engage with both Rosenthal and their peers.

Students can connect one-on-one with Abbe Rosenthal for Executive Coaching to master their elevator pitch, make professional connections, and improve their interview skills.
