One of the popular features of the Rutgers Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program is our Externship Exchange Program, a cornerstone of experiential learning.
Through externships, students work remotely in teams to solve real-world projects for partner organizations under the guidance of professors and external company mentors. Each team consists of students from multidisciplinary backgrounds, with a student serving as team lead. Congratulations to all externs of another semester of fantastic work!
Their semester of work culminates in a handoff to their company mentors as well as a lightning talk—a quick presentation of the highlights of their experience. On August 12th, we hosted the Summer 2025 Externship Lightning Talks.
Each presentation starts with an introduction to team members, their MBS advisors, and their company mentors before diving into:
- Introduction to the partner organization and background
- Problem statement with goals
- Concept map
- Results
- Insights and takeaways
At the end of the night, several MBS students were awarded fellowships. Additionally, the audience voted for teams with the best slides and the best overall presentation. This year, we introduced a new category: the Excellence in Contributions Award, honoring students whose dedication and teamwork truly go above and beyond expectations. Congratulations to all externs for stellar work this semester!

The MBS Externship Exchange program is open to students during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Many thanks to all advisors, mentors, and MBS team members. To learn more about externships, visit the MBS Externship Exchange program webpage or attend one of our informational webinars.
