Prepare for the Rutgers Career Fair: Virtual Career Lunch

The Rutgers Spring Career & Internship Mega Fair is right around the corner. Are you ready? In preparation, MBS Executive Coach Abbe Rosenthal gave tips on how to answer one of the most common questions students are asked: “Can you tell me about yourself?”

During this virtual career lunch, hosted on February 8th, Rosenthal provided tips on crafting a personal pitch. She gave advice on how to describe the unique nature of the Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree, using it to stand out from the crowd and differentiate yourself.

Here are some of her main points.

  1. Craft your personal pitch. Rosenthal shared advice from Jodi Glickman, CEO and founder of GreatOnTheJob.com. For an in-depth look at how to craft your pitch, watch Glickman’s LinkedIn Learning course or check out our blog post on leading with your destination. Here are some takeaways:

  • Lead with your goal. Determine where you are, what you are trying to accomplish, and where you would like to be next.
  • Describe your past. Discuss experiences that are relevant to your goal and highlight your transferrable skills.
  • Connect the dots. Describe what makes you unique and how your background aligns with your goal.
  1. Leverage the MBS degree! Talk about how this hybrid degree educates you in both business and science. This is an opportunity to differentiate yourself and to stand out from the crowd. Rosenthal recommends referring to it by its full name, the Master of Business and Science degree, to avoid confusion and highlight the dual nature of the degree. This can also turn a monologue into a dialogue, engaging the other speaker.

  1. Prepare in advance. Put today’s tips into action. During this virtual lunch, students had the opportunity to prepare their pitch and practice with classmates. This will help you speak confidently and prepare for issues that may arise—which may include time limitations. Look at postings for your dream job/company to see what skills are relevant and where you fit in.

The PSM program hosts these workshops to prepare our students for success. In this workshop, attendees had their questions answered by Rosenthal, put their learning into action, and got to know other MBS students!
