On April 19th, 90 Master of Business and Science (MBS) students gathered for an insightful session led by MBS Executive Coach and Assistant Director Abbe Rosenthal, MA, PCC, DYL Certified Coach. Rosenthal was joined by Liyana Johan, Customer Success and Education Manager for Jobscan.

Jobscan is a service that helps job seekers land more interviews by using AI to analyze their application materials against any job description. Johan shared invaluable tips on optimizing your job search process using this powerful platform.

Here are some of the key benefits of using Jobscan.

  • Resume Builder

When it comes to job hunting, your resume is the most important tool. Yet, despite hours of refinement, many find themselves facing the challenge of the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). These systems, which are used by 97.4% of Fortune 500 companies, often determine whether your application moves forward.

Johan guided students through the steps of creating ATS-friendly resumes on the platform, offering tips on simplifying the process and increasing the chances of landing more interviews.

  • Optimize your resume with Power Edit

After you’ve crafted your resume, Jobscan’s AI-powered resume scanner provides a match score against job descriptions, offering tailored recommendations for improvement such as adding necessary keywords or measurable results.

Jobscan also uses the URL of the job description page to identify specific ATS systems, ensuring the tool can suggest the most suitable recommendations for students to increase their match scores.

Johan also emphasized that while the tool facilitates the creation of an optimized resume quickly, students must ensure that their resumes authentically portray their experiences.

  • AI-Powered Cover Letter Generator

Cover letters, though optional, can offer a unique opportunity to showcase your professional story to recruiters. According to Glassdoor, cover letters can help you demonstrate your passion for a specific role and stand out from the crowd. Jobscan’s cover letter generator simplifies this process, allowing students to create personalized letters with a single click using artificial intelligence (AI). This tool empowers students to stand out and make meaningful connections with potential employers.

Here are some key tips for crafting an effective cover letter.

  • Easy-to-use Job tracker

Staying organized during the job hunt is critical. Instead of using Excel or having hundreds of different tabs opened, students can track and manage their applications and interviews all in one place through  Jobscan.

Students can download the Job Tracker Chrome extension to save their favorite jobs directly from popular job boards like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor. All the job details will be automatically added to the job card and they can also scan your resume from the job listing itself to get an instant match rate.

This means more time to focus on nailing upcoming interviews (check out our article on how to craft your personal pitch) and less stress from having to manually keep track of different applications.

  • LinkedIn Optimization

Johan also highlighted the significance of LinkedIn profiles in the hiring process. With over 1 billion users across 200 countries and regions, LinkedIn is a valuable tool for job searchers. Jobscan’s LinkedIn Optimization tool provides students with actionable insights to enhance their profiles, increasing their visibility among recruiters. Sarah Viner, Customer Success Manager at LinkedIn on the LinkedIn Learning team, provided tips on how to level up your LinkedIn profile at a previous Virtual Friday.
