On Friday, October 17, 2025, the Master of Business and Science (MBS) community came together over Zoom for another Virtual Friday event of the semester - Level Up Your LinkedIn Profile. The session was co-hosted by Abbe Rosenthal, Assistant Director and Executive Coach, and Brenda Rodriguez, Student Success and Engagement Specialist. The event featured Joe Moore, Senior Customer Success Manager at LinkedIn Learning, who shared valuable insights on how students can enhance their online professional presence. MBS students—as well as undergraduate Rutgers students—tuned in to hear Moore’s valuable insights.
Moore, who has been with LinkedIn for over six years, works within the Higher Education department, collaborating with institutions across North America. His work focuses on helping students leverage LinkedIn and LinkedIn Learning to strengthen their professional profiles and build meaningful career connections. During the session, Moore encouraged participants to connect with him on LinkedIn and invited participants to share their profiles in the chat to connect with their peers.
LinkedIn as a Career Ecosystem
“LinkedIn is more than a job search platform; it’s a career navigation ecosystem connecting people, learning, and opportunities. LinkedIn is a journey,” explained Moore.
He highlighted how the platform’s data helps identify trending skills, which are then used to shape LinkedIn Learning courses, ensuring that users can stay ahead of evolving industry demands. He shared the fact that 7 people are hired every minute on LinkedIn.
Moore described LinkedIn as a navigation app for your career, one that helps users discover direction through new opportunities, connections, and continuous learning.
Tips to Build a Strong Profile
Moore shared several key strategies on how to level up your LinkedIn Profile:
- Start on mobile: Setting up a profile through the mobile app offers a more user-friendly experience.
- Tell your story: Unlike a resume, a LinkedIn profile is public and ever-evolving. It’s an opportunity to express your professional journey.
- Use a professional photo: A clear headshot with minimal distractions, professional attire, and a natural smile can increase your visibility. Profiles with photos receive 21 times more views and engagement.
- Craft a strong headline: Express your passion and direction. For students, this could include your major or field of study, while also highlighting your professional interests.
- Write a concise summary: In one or two sentences, describe who you are, then include your top skills, experiences, and goals.
- Keep your experiences current: Regularly update internships, externships, volunteer work, certifications, and achievements. Keeping role descriptions on hand helps maintain an accurate and polished profile.
Moore then transitioned to sharing how artificial intelligence (AI) and LinkedIn Learning can help streamline the profile-building process.
Using AI and LinkedIn Learning
LinkedIn now integrates AI drafting tools that assist in creating effective headlines and summaries. Moore also recommended the course “How to Craft a Job-Winning LinkedIn Headline” to help users refine their professional messaging.
Students can further leverage AI-based interview practice tools by uploading job descriptions and simulating interview questions to prepare for real-world scenarios.
“LinkedIn and LinkedIn Learning work hand-in-hand as one showcases your skills, while the other helps you build them,” emphasized Moore.
Highlighting Key Skills
Skills are among the most powerful components of a LinkedIn profile. Moore explained that recruiters use LinkedIn Recruiter software to filter and identify candidates based on specific skills and keywords.
To optimize visibility:
- Review profiles of professionals in your desired roles and identify the top skills and industry keywords they feature.
- Add relevant ones to your own profile to increase your chances of appearing among the top candidates.
- Understand the recruiter’s perspective: there’s even a LinkedIn Learning course designed for recruiters to learn how to use this tool, so students can gain an edge by reviewing the same material.
Networking Insights
Over 50% of hires occur through personal connections, says a report from the HR Digest, highlighting the importance of building and maintaining a strong professional network.
Moore encouraged students to start by connecting with people they already know, such as friends, classmates, professors, mentors, and colleagues.
He also demonstrated the use of LinkedIn’s Omni Search bar to explore jobs, people, and companies, and advised following professionals who inspire you to learn how they articulate their stories.
Moore advised students to avoid requesting referrals right away and instead, focus on building genuine conversations and nurturing relationships.
Rosenthal added a helpful tip: Using the Posts filter to search for job titles within the past 24 hours can help identify recruiters or hiring managers actively hiring for those roles.
Moore and the students engaged in a question-and-answer session. Moore concluded the session by reminding students that career paths are rarely linear, and sometimes the most fulfilling opportunities arise when skills and experiences merge in unexpected ways.
Many thanks to Joe Moore for sharing his valuable insights and practical strategies with our students, guiding them to strengthen their professional presence and prepare for a successful career in an ever-evolving digital world.
