A Warm Welcome: International Students Lunch

On January 24th, the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program hosted a special lunch session for our international students. It was a fantastic opportunity to welcome newcomers and reconnect with current students before the semester picks up pace. Our usual classroom setting at the SERC building transformed into a vibrant global space, decorated with flags from various countries, celebrating the diversity of our student community.

The event was hosted by Abbe Rosenthal, MA, PCC, DYL Certified Coach, who introduced Rutgers faculty and staff in attendance, including Rutgers Global speakers Stephanie Acuna, Senior International Student Advisor.

Acuna then led an insightful presentation on immigration best practices for MBS students on F-1 visas, covering key topics such as:

  • In-person course requirements: International students must maintain a minimum number of in-person or hybrid course credits each semester. Make sure to carefully plan your degree progress with this requirement in mind.
  • Employment vs. Practical training: Employment includes any service performed in exchange for money, tuition, or fees, whereas practical training provides work authorization for off-campus experience in a student’s field of study. Acuna suggested that students consult the Global Office when in doubt.
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) guidelines: Acuna outlined eligibility, application procedures, and best practices to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.

Following the presentation, students participated in an interactive exercise to reflect on their career goals and how the MBS program can support their professional journey. Rosenthal introduced to students the available resources they should take advantage of, including the Externship Exchange Program, her Virtual Friday series, a career-focused initiative to assist students with job searches, one-on-one sessions for personalized guidance from our MBS advisors, and more.

The event wrapped up with a lively Q&A session, where current students shared their experiences, offering valuable insights and practical advice to new students navigating academic and professional life. A huge thank you to the students, faculty, and staff who made this event a success!
