Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Examine the characteristics of a successful product development process from the perspective of product quality, product cost, development time, development cost, and development capability
  • Examine how the design function plays an important role in defining the form of the product to meet the potential customer needs
  • Critically analyze the identification of product opportunities as well as the identification of customer needs
  • Apply the basic principles of engineering design and industrial design in conceptualizing the product
  • Use prototypes to communicate ideas
  • Plan, conceptualize, implement, and present a design project
  • Describe the manufacturing process including purchasing, distribution, and installation
  • Produce documentation such as personas, wireframes, prototypes, and financial models
