A panel of students in the School of Graduate Studies will discuss their public service and share what they learned at the 2023 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) workshop, "Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering."
Panelists include:
- Angelica Barreto. Ph.D. student in Cell and Developmental Biology
- Simone Boyd, Ph.D. student in Clinical Psychology
- Alysse Moldawer, Ph.D. student in Anthropology
- Levben Parson, Ph.D. student in Earth and Planetary Sciences
Topics include:
- How to impact government policy, including policies that determine funding priorities
- How to advocate for critical change in areas such as mental health, education, the environment, climate, and opportunities for under-served populations
- Strategies for communicating with policymakers and the general public: tailoring language to the audience -The importance of connecting the humanities to the traditional STEM disciplines -How easy it is to visit a congressional office and have your voice heard
- Available pathways to post-graduation careers in advocacy and public service -Four things that may surprise you about policymaking at the federal level
