Intent of Policy Supplement:
- This policy supplement only pertains to classes under the jurisdiction of the Rutgers Professional Science Master’s Program (i.e., classes with the course code “16:137:###).
- It is intended to provide clarification to the SGS policy as it pertains to classes under the jurisdiction of the Rutgers Professional Science Master’s Program.

- The Rutgers School for Graduate Studies policy for IN grades is found in Section 1.3.3 of the “Making progress through the program”.
- Refer to the Rutgers School for Graduate Studies policy for IN grades for information regarding the impact of IN grades on student academic standing, resolving IN grades, and ability to register for classes.
Reasons that justify an IN grade:
Students may be granted an “Incomplete” (IN) grade if there are unusual circumstances that prevent them from completing the class.
Process to grant an IN grade:
- The granting of an IN grade occurs only after the student consults with and receives approval from the course instructor.
- The granting of an IN grade is up to the discretion of the course instructor.
- IN grades requested after 50% of the course is completed, or 50% of the final grade is accrued are discouraged and require approval of the Academic Officer.
- Example: For a 17-week semester, IN grades requested after week 8 will require approval
- In cases where there is a discrepancy of opinion between the course instructor and the student, the granting of an IN grade, or not, will be determined by the Academic Director.
- Exceptions will be considered by the Academic Officer on a case-by-case basis.
Examples of Reasons that Justify an IN grade*
- Personal or family illness
- Being involved in an accident requiring hospitalization or resulting in severe physical or mental injuries**
- A death in your immediate family
- Unplanned personal, family, or professional commitments
- Extended work travel or military assignments
- An unexpected emergency
