Description
In this course, students will learn about global cosmetic regulatory, safety and quality requirements and how they influence cosmetic formulas, claims and packaging.  We will examine key constituencies for cosmetic products, including global regulators, lawyers, product and factory inspectors, nongovernmental organizations and the public and how their demands are addressed through the product development process.  Topics covered include safety and quality testing, ingredient selection, claim substantiation and sustainability in addition to global regulations.  At course completion, students will understand the skills required to achieve and maintain compliance with these requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
 
This course is intended to complement the introductory and advanced formulation and dermaceutics courses currently offered to provide the students with practical strategies for ingredient selection, manufacturing methods and testing to comply with government and consumer requirements and expectations.
Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will understand:

  • Cosmetic regulatory structures in major markets around the world and product categories covered by those structures
  • Safety testing standards for cosmetic product and ingredient categories including fragrances
  • Quality management in cosmetic manufacturing facilities
  • Global cosmetic claim substantiation standards and efficacy tests
