To facilitate experiential learning, Master of Business and Science (MBS) students finish their degrees by completing a Capstone. This project-based course serves as a culmination of skills learned throughout a student’s time in the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program.

In this course, students demonstrate their ability to combine science and business thinking. They:

  • Identify a patented technology

  • Determine a novel use

  • Create a comprehensive concept-to-market business plan

Students exercise their abilities in teamwork, project management, and communication by presenting to industry experts during semester-end “Venture Forum” presentations. In venture forums, entrepreneurs have the opportunity to present their business propositions to third-party investors. This is the first serious test of whether venture thinking meets realistic standards. Teams also submit a full business plan document as part of this course. In December 2022, MBS students gave stellar presentations.

Teams presented a semester-long project to industry leaders, or “angel investors,” who invested imaginary money in teams they feel have viable ideas. The investor panel included individuals with backgrounds in industry, who understand how new ventures develop. This is the most realistic feedback we can provide students.

79 students spread across 20 teams built mock startup companies. Teams of 3-5 students were formed through a process which grouped together like-minded individuals. They had nine weeks to work on their projects. Dr. Tom Bryant, Ph.D., served as lead professor.

Each team presented a 10-minute summary of their startup, followed by a 5-minute Q&A from the investors. Investors included industry pioneers and experts. The presentations were moderated by Dr. Bryant.

Presentations were attention-grabbing and well-organized. Team members served different roles such as CFO, CEO, COO, product development engineer, and more, allowing students to draw from their own expertise.

After each presentation, investors offered compliments, suggestions, considerations, and pointed questions.

Some of the many startup companies offered products such as seaweed bioplastic packaging, liquid pimple patches, plant-based deli meat, transdermal relief cream, mounted air purifiers, sun care formulations, indoor vegetable growing cabinets, and software that helps e-commerce apparel buyers visualize clothing.

Investors agreed, presentations keep improving year after year. This year, teams presented a wide variety of technology and ideas, all of them passionate about their product.

Capstone presentations show off the capabilities of our students. If you are a current MBS student, check them out! You can see what is expected of your own presentation, and you may even find inspiration for your company. The next set of capstone presentations will be held on May 2nd and 3rd, 2023. Visit our events page for more details.

Congratulations to all MBS Capstone students!
