I Am an MBS Student: New Student Orientation

Meet the newest Master of Business and Science (MBS) students! Last week, the MBS team welcomed new students at the Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center and over Zoom.

MBS instructor Kathleen Cashman, who teaches our popular course Principles of Communication and Leadership, ignited the evening and introduced MBS faculty, staff, and alumni in attendance.

The evening was filled with activities, pushing students to connect and learn more about how MBS can serve them. Students broke into groups, getting to know each other and discussing why they chose the MBS degree.

Next, Cashman led an exercise: In groups, students had to fill 30 seconds with statements starting with “I am.” This task allows students to practice articulating their personal identity and story—a great skill to have when networking.

What’s in it for an MBS Student?

Afterward, students were warmly welcomed by Dr. Deborah Silver, executive director of the Professional Science Master’s program. The MBS degree helps students get from “I am” to “I want to become,” said Dr. Silver. Here are some of the many opportunities we provide our students to achieve this goal:

  1. Outstanding science curriculum. Our program provides students with cutting-edge industry and scientific knowledge.
  1. Strong business acumen. We provide students with essential business courses and other opportunities to grow this skillset.
  1. Experiential learning. A cornerstone of our program, we incorporate experiential learning into many of our classes. Some of the opportunities we provide for our students include our internship programexternship exchange program, events, and more—several of our courses even include class trips!
  1. Colloquium and events. Our alumni continually rave about our colloquium and other events, stating that they help students step outside their comfort zones and explore new opportunities. We host many events for our students each semester, both in-person and online.
  1. Real-world applications. Many of our courses are taught by industry practitioners, providing a real-world insight into applications of the course materials.
  1. Design Your Life (DYL). MBS executive coaches are available to our students, and they use the DYL framework to guide students in achieving their goals—showing how students can use the MBS degree to their fullest advantage.
  1. Leadership and Communication. Our signature course Principles of Communication and Leadership teaches students how to communicate effectively and become leaders. Cashman institutes an innovative assignment challenging students to perform random acts of kindness
  1. Innovation. In our program, we nurture innovation. Many of our courses push students to innovate to create unique products and ideas.
  1. Networking. We host many networking events—both in person and virtual. Additionally, our classes invite industry professionals to speak to students.
  1. Team-based classes. Many of our courses require students to work in teams—mirroring the real-life workplace facilitating organic connections.
  1. Alumni Network Connections. We have a robust alumni network spanning across industries and geographic locations. In addition to our formal alumni-student mentoring program, we frequently invite alumni to our events to mingle with students.
  1. Capstone. Students demonstrate the business and science skills they have learned throughout their MBS education in our Capstone course, the equivalent of a master’s thesis.

To cap off the evening, MBS executive coach Abbe Lynn Rosenthal, MA, PCC, DYL Certified Coach & Facilitator shared with students a valuable tool to plan their futures: Design Your Life methodology. Rosenthal explained the design thinking process, the led students in the creation of their Odyssey Plans.

To all new MBS students, welcome! And to all MBS students, welcome back for a new and exciting semester!
