The world is changing at an unprecedented rate, and the Professional Science Master’s program is committed to preparing students for the modern workforce. As part of this mission, we frequently reevaluate our curriculum to ensure we equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed. For students in our Personal Care Science concentration, we’ve introduced the new course, Special Topics: New Technologies in Personal Care Science. In this course, students explore recent advancements in the personal care category.

About the Professor

This course is taught by Dr. Manpreet Randhawa. Dr. Randhawa received a doctorate in Cellular Biology from George Mason University. She has worked for companies including Avon and Johnson & Johnson. She has taken on different roles throughout her career, including product development and marketing. Dr. Randhawa has touched on every aspect of bringing a product to market, from innovation to translating science for marketing purposes.

An Inside Look

In this course, students explore both the science and marketing strategies behind new technologies in personal care categories. Students examine the cutting-edge technologies that are transforming and shaping the future of the personal care industry―technologies that elevate product effectiveness, improve safety, address sustainability, and advance the idea of personalization. The course will focus on the five main topics of skincare, haircare, the microbiome, naturals, and the role of artificial intelligence in personal care.

“We will go into depth about the science behind those products, how they were marketed, and the big role social media plays,” said Dr. Randhawa.

The course will also include guest speakers from industry to share real-world examples of projects and how course concepts apply.

There is something for everyone in this course. Students draw from their own fields of expertise and enhance their skills, whether they are in science, marketing, or entrepreneurship.

“Students will have a 360 view of different aspects of bringing a product to market,” said Dr. Randhawa. In this course, students will holistically examine a product’s lifecycle.

This course presents an opportunity for students to take what they have learned and apply it to a real-life brand of their choice as one of the course assignments.

“There’s a missing link that students want to see,” said Dr. Randhawa, “about how products are brought to the market. There are different angles.” Like most other Master of Business and Science degree courses, this class was designed to help students bridge the gap between academic studies and real-life applications.

New Technologies in Personal Care Science is a valuable addition to our curriculum. It provides students with valuable insight regarding innovations within the industry, preparing them for a career in the personal care sector. To learn more, see our course description page.
