Thinking like a Recruiter with Joe Moore

On Friday, April 10, 2026, the Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree program hosted a Virtual Friday session over Zoom featuring Joe Moore, a LinkedIn Learning professional specializing in higher education partnerships. This session, hosted by MBS Assistant Director and Executive Coach Abbe Rosenthal, is part of our Virtual Friday series. Hosted once a month on a Friday, each session focuses on a different professional development topic and occasionally features guest speakers, such as Moore.

In this session, Moore guided students on how they can strategically use both LinkedIn and LinkedIn Learning to build their personal brand, strengthen their profiles, and improve career outcomes.

Here are key takeaways from the session.

LinkedIn as a Career Navigation Tool

Moore, who has spent over seven years at LinkedIn working with institutions across North America, described LinkedIn as a “navigation app for your career.”

He highlighted LinkedIn's impact with a statistic: seven people are hired every minute on the platform.

Moore encouraged students to actively engage in the discussion by sharing their profiles in chat, connecting with peers, and building meaningful relationships early on. Over 50 percent of hires are driven by personal connections, according to a report from The HR Digest, which emphasizes networking as a critical component of career success.

How to Build a Strong LinkedIn Profile

To stand out in a competitive pool, Moore emphasized that small profile details can significantly impact visibility. He outlined several necessities for a strong profile:

  • Compelling Headline: Highlight your field of study and career interests. Moore encouraged the use of AI tools where helpful to refine messaging.
  • Structured “About” Section: A concise summary including your background, experiences, skills, and career goals in four to five sentences.
  • Experience Descriptions: Instead of simple bullet points, write experiences using the STAR method to showcase impact and achievements.

Moore also stressed the importance of regularly updating profiles with internships, externships, certifications, and volunteer work to reflect continuous growth.

Leveraging LinkedIn Learning and AI Tools

LinkedIn Learning is a valuable LinkedIn tool that helps users build skills they can showcase on their profiles.

Courses like “How to Craft a Job-Winning Headline” and AI-powered interview-preparation tools help candidates prepare for mock interviews. These tools allow users to input job descriptions and simulate interview scenarios, providing valuable practice and feedback.

Moore also emphasized the importance of skills-based optimization, noting that recruiters frequently use LinkedIn Recruiter software to filter candidates based on relevant skills and keywords.

Thinking Like a Recruiter

The session also addressed broader job search strategies. Moore advised students to customize their resumes for each role, rather than relying on a single generic version.

Building on this, Abbe Rosenthal recommended using tools like Jobscan to extract keywords from job descriptions and create Applicant Tracking System (ATS)-friendly resumes. The event was followed by an engaging Q&A session, leaving attendees with actionable steps to strengthen their career readiness.

At the end of the event, students could ask questions directly to Moore and Rosenthal. They left with actionable steps to strengthen their career readiness.

This event proved to have a lasting impact on participants.

"Everybody knows that LinkedIn is the premier networking tool used by recruiters and professionals across all industries," said MBS student Elo Hernandez, one of the many participants of the session. "Getting tips from an expert like Joe Moore is invaluable. He not only shared LinkedIn tips, like effective headline strategies & how to approach the "about me" and skills sections, but also introduced using the STAR method (typically reserved for interviews) to strengthen resume bullets and your LinkedIn experience section, to align them with job description responsibilities."

“This event provided me with a great introduction to what LinkedIn Learning can offer me in terms of different skill sets and a personalized learning plan," said Mason Bohme, an MBS student pursuing a concentration in Product Design. "I thought it was cool how, with LinkedIn Learning, you can find a topic that you want to learn more about and then be provided with a customized plan that you can complete at your own pace. It really opens up opportunities to learn new things. In a professional sense, the event provided me with some great tips on how to improve my LinkedIn profile. I never knew that I could use LinkedIn Learning in order to help improve my LinkedIn profile as well.”

Moore concluded saying, “Think like a recruiter. What skills would you want to see?”
