Insights from Middlesex County 2050: Modeling for Sustainable Growth and Infrastructure Planning

Sustainability professionals face a rapidly evolving landscape—and at the Professional Science Master’s program, we equip students in our Sustainability concentration to drive innovation and lead change at the intersection of science, business, and sustainability.

How can New Jersey sustainability professionals navigate the changing landscape in Trenton, Washington, and beyond? On October 23rd, this question took center stage at a panel hosted by the Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree. We invited industry professionals, government regulators, and academics to our classroom in the SERC building on Busch Campus for a night of lively discussion and networking.

The panel was moderated by Ed Linky, instructor of our course “Fundamentals of Sustainability,” and hosted by Jay Goldring, MBS Assistant Professor of Professional Practice and Graduate Director.

Although this event was especially informative to students in the MBS Sustainability concentration, it was open to all MBS students. It offered an opportunity for students to meet and connect with each other and our esteemed panelists.

Following an introduction by Linky on sustainability in the current landscape, each panelist shared a presentation.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Ozge Kaplan, US Environmental Protection Agency: Applications of the City-Based Optimization Model for Energy Technologies (COMET) model in New Jersey
  • Dr. Jose Pillich, City University of New York Advanced Science Research Center: Geospatial applications of COMET scenarios
  • Dr. Ahmed Mousa, Manager, PSE&G Utility of the Future and Instructor, Rutgers PSM Program: State of the electric grid and planning for future demand from data centers and shifts from other energy sources
  • Andy Kricun, P.E., Former Executive Director, Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority and Instructor, Rutgers PSM Program: Planning for Waste Water Infrastructure and Extreme Weather Events
  • Charles Harewood, Project Manager, US Environmental Protection Agency: Sustainability Planning and Messaging in Tonawanda, NY
