Overview
The goal of the MBS Food Science concentration is to educate and equip students with the skills and tools necessary to successfully manage both technical developments and commercial applications in the food industry and related consumer-driven industries. Students will not only learn fundamental principles and applications of food science and technology, but will gain fundamental knowledge of key business areas including finance and accounting, entrepreneurship, marketing, communication and leadership, management and planning, intellectual property, ethics, and regulatory.
Skills Gained
Through expert instruction and experiential education, students will:
- Gain a comprehensive knowledge of food science and technology as well as food safety
- Gain fundamental knowledge of key industry-related business areas
- Learn state-of-the-art scientific methods, processes, and applications
- Gain an overview of the commercialization process
- Learn about the guiding principles and best practices for product commercialization

Preferred Academic or Professional Experience
Academic
- Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: food science, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, engineering, or related fields.
- A course in organic chemistry is preferred. Students without organic chemistry experience will be required to complete a course in their first semester.
Professional
- All professional experience will be considered as part of the application process.
