The New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC), the premier professional association for the cosmetics and personal care sector in the New York tri-state area, honored students at the annual NYSCC Supports Education Night 2022, in the Edison Ballroom, New York City, on December 7th, 2022. The theme was Sustainability. Attendees were encouraged to wear emerald green.

Rutgers Professional Science Master’s Program's executive director, Dr. Deborah Silver, and assistant professor, Dr. Beth Ann Murphy, were in attendance to congratulate the MBS students awarded scholarships.

The NYSCC and Rutgers MBS programs share the mission to advance the “science” of cosmetic science and to provide educational and networking opportunities for this community. Through this partnership, Rutgers MBS students volunteer with the NYSCC. In addition, the two recently co-sponsored a panel where industry professionals discussed current trends and new technologies in personal care. We are proud to have MBS representation in the NYSCC—MBS personal care science (PCS) alumna Maria Sousa currently serves as Social Media Chair.

Maria Jolina Lou Flores, M.D., Ph.D., recipient of the Future on Sustainability scholarship, applied for the scholarship using the knowledge she had learned in our course Fundamentals of Sustainability, taught by Professor Edward Linky, Esq. Dr. Flores attributes her success to the combination of skills she gained through writing requirements of the PCS concentration, insight from her professors, the broadened perspective gained from the sustainability class on corporate social responsibility, as well as holistic insights from conversations with PCS professors, coaches, and classmates.

MBS also helps Dr. Flores to grow outside of her comfort zone, allowing her the flexibility to take courses that she finds genuinely interesting.

“[The NYSCC] is offering a lot of support to students taking cosmetic chemistry or anything that is adjacent to the society,” said Dr. Flores.
