How the Rutgers MBS Degree Prepares Students for Career Growth

Choosing a graduate program is one of the most important investments you can make in your future. The Rutgers Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree is designed for science and technology professionals who want to bridge the gap between technical expertise and business acumen and build a career that reflects both.

Here are some of the unique offerings that prospective students can look forward to from the program.

Coaching and Mentorship

One of the most distinctive features of the MBS degree program is the personalized support available to every student.

The Alumni-Student Mentoring Program connects students with MBS alumni working across industries, offering guidance, career advice, and networking support from professionals who have walked the same path.

Through Executive Coaching, certified coaches offer one-on-one sessions and workshops using frameworks like Designing Your Life (DYL) to help students clarify goals, balance priorities, and build the professional skills that matter most to employers.

Experiential Learning

The MBS degree program goes beyond the classroom by connecting students to real-world opportunities before graduation.

The Externship Program places students on company projects, giving them hands-on experience that directly applies what they have learned in the classroom to industry challenges.

The Internship Program connects students to opportunities that help build skills, explore career paths, and strengthen résumés, giving students a competitive edge in the job market and earning credit at the same time.

Almost every MBS class incorporates elements of experiential learning—from guest lectures, to hands-on projects, to field trips. You can view the MBS course catalog to see more information about each course, including skills you’ll learn, instructor background information, course objectives, and more.

Networking and Professional Development

Building a professional network is a critical part of career growth, and the MBS degree program creates multiple pathways to do so.

We offer a variety of career workshops covering professional development topics, including resume and LinkedIn building, interview coaching, job search planning, personal branding, and more. We regularly host industry panels and guest lectures, bringing professionals directly to our students and providing them with exposure to real-world perspectives across sectors.

The MBS Industrial Advisory Board (IAB), made up of nearly 30 STEM-focused business leaders from industries including pharmaceuticals, research and development, consumer goods, and energy, serves as a bridge between industry and academia. Many IAB members are MBS alumni themselves, offering mentorship and career guidance rooted in firsthand experience.

Curriculum and Innovation

The MBS curriculum is built around the idea that the most effective professionals are those who can speak both the languages of science and business. Core business courses are paired with dedicated science electives tailored to each student's concentration, ensuring rigorous, relevant learning.

The “Science and Technology Management Capstone” course brings it all together. This project-based course covers entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship, innovation commercialization, and intellectual property, challenging students to work in teams to analyze technology innovations and develop full business plans. This course includes an on-campus retreat, and it culminates in a live presentation to a panel of judges.

As an MBS student, you’ll be able to meet with your advisor at any time to help you map your goals and course plans. You can connect via your dedicated student success app, Navigate360.

Our Alumni Community

The impact of the MBS degree program extends well beyond graduation. As an MBS alumnus, you’ll be part of a network of professionals that expands across industries, functions, professional levels, and geographic locations.

We welcome alumni to join us for events throughout the year, including our annual MBS Alumni & Family Brewery Event held at Readington Brewery. Many alumni are invited to join panels or give guest lectures in our classrooms.

Additionally, upon graduation, you’ll be granted access to an MBS alumni-specific platform called Graduway. In Graduway, you’ll be able to stay updated with alumni news, access a job board with postings from your peers, and receive invitations to upcoming events.
