A legal expert, an engineer, and an ethicist walk into a classroom. The first thing they see is an Unavoidable Death Warning sign that states, “Your driverless car is about to cause a death – please select a target”. The options are: 1) Someone on the left, 2) You, and 3) Someone on the right. This is how a compelling discussion about Ethics and Self-Driving Cars started, which was hosted on April 10, 2019.
On April 9, 2019, the MBS Program hosted a career panel discussion for the Personal Care Industry. The panelists were drawn from different specialties, providing some glimpse of the various opportunities within the industry. Having these panelists speak about their roles and reaching their career goals gave the attending students the opportunity to learn about the different careers paths within the Personal Care Industry.
On March 19, MBS students, alumni, faculty, and members of the Industrial Advisory Board joined to mingle, network, dine, and reconnect at the 7th Annual PSM Alumni-Student Mixer, a now-signature event for the MBS program, which will celebrate its milestone 10th anniversary next year.
March is the National Women’s History month. What better way to celebrate than attending the Women in Data Science Conference (WiDS)? MBS students remotely attended this unique and energetic event along with members of more than 150 organizations across the globe. The fourth annual Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference was hosted at Stanford University on March 4th, 2019. Talk topics ranged from ethics, cybersecurity, data privacy, ML applications to career motivation.

We decided to host an event to share our personal experiences as females in the working in life sciences. We were nervous and exhilarated.

On Tuesday, February 11th, 2019, MBS students from the Fall 2019 semester Becton Dickinson Externship Exchange teams, along with Dr. Christie Nelson, presented their work at Becton Dickinson’s Headquarter located in Franklin Lakes, NJ. The Becton Dickinson Externship Exchange comprised two teams of MBS students: team 1 focused on the analysis of the results of the Voice of the Associates Survey and team 2 focused on anomaly detection in Travel and Expenses. These projects were initiated in Sept 2018 and ended in Feb 2019.
After listening to several TED Talks during the Communications & Leadership course, seven MBS women employed in the healthcare profession were inspired to act. We joined the MBS Women’s Leadership Initiative, a sisterhood which educates and empowers women in science and technology jobs. Our class assignment for the “demonstrate your personal best leadership” project developed into a program to educate future women leaders.
Searching for a job is an important part of every student’s life, but the process can be time-consuming and stressful. One of the great opportunities Rutgers University offers is the Career Fair, which enables a student to meet more than 200 employers at the same place and on the same day. However, failing to prepare equates to preparing to fail. Students who prepare in advance have higher chances of success than others.
